Belize 2024 - Turneffe Island - Scuba Diving 1

I was going to upgrade my GoPro for this trip but Andrew suggested that he get me an early Christmas present of an underwater housing for my iPhone and a new dive light. Awesome! When it arrived, (SeaLife SportDiver Ultra Pro 2500 set) I carefully read the instructions and played around with it quite a bit at home but, honestly, I wasn't totally sure how it was going to work for me. (I'm always hesitant with new tech things.) Well, I love it!!! I'm still no pro underwater photographer (nor will I ever be or want to be) but it was super easy to use and I feel like I got way better photos and video than I would have with a GoPro. I loved being able to quickly switch between photo and video modes and zoom in and out.

Thanks to Andrew for these next three photos.

I got way too many "favourites" to narrow it down to just one blog post worth, so here's the first instalment.  :-)    These are the "non-fish" ones.

Belize 2024 - Turneffe Island - Flowers, Birds, Other Critters

It's hard to believe our poor little hibiscus plant at home is the same as these huge bushes with huge flowers! These could be found throughout the resort.

There were just a few other flowering bushes but all very pretty.

On our last trip to Belize (to Blackbird Caye) we recall there being lots of birds so we were excited to get out and take some photos. Unfortunately, they weren't as plentiful here. Andrew usually went out for a walk with his camera while I was at the gym so he found more than I did. Of note, there were pelicans, wood peckers, and hooded orioles that I didn't get photos of.

Tropical Mockingbird

Plover

Tropical Mockingbird

Cormorants

We spent a fair amount of time with this Great Egret. I like the reflection in the water and managed to get some decent photos of his takeoff and then landing a short distance away.

There were lots of lizards, small iguanas that loved the flower petals, and a few sea stars could be seen beside the boardwalks.

Belize 2024 - Turneffe Island 2

Turneffe Island Resort started out as a fishing lodge, with original structures built in 1962.  It was purchased by current owners in 2001 and gradually built up for comfort and service but still keeping the environment in mind. Here's a few photos of what the Resort has to offer.

The clubhouse and outdoor bar on the left, dining room, office and gift shop on the right.

Dining room on top floor, office and gift shop in the lower level.

We enjoyed many delicious meals and desserts! Homemade cookies after every dive; appetizers before supper; unique and delicious drinks (pumpkin colada, mango colada, raspberry sangria, etc.). SO good!

The clubhouse and bar area.

The clubhouse is a beautiful new building with a bar area and pool table;
lots of comfy seating, puzzles, board games, and a small book shelf.

The island runs on solar power . There are many solar panels just behind the main buildings and hot water panels on the roofs of both guest and staff accommodations. The water supply is collected from rain water or is made by a reverse osmosis system. And, unrelated to environmental concerns, the wifi is excellent and is available throughout the resort, including each cabin!  :-)

So many solar panels!
Serenity Spa - I didn't take advantage but they have a variety of spa services.
Kayaks, stand up paddle boards, and a couple of hobie catamarans for the sailing crowd.
The dive and fishing shops.

I was so happy there was a little gym on site! With air conditioning, thank goodness. It was by no means perfect -- most of the machines didn't work well, some of the equipment was rusted, and the pull-up bar seemed a bit sketchy. But!!! I worked out every day except the long day trip to the Blue Hole, did lots of strict pull-ups, used a good set of 20# dumbbells a lot of the time, and some light weight barbell movements. Loved it!!

And we enjoyed many beautiful sun rises and sunsets.  :-)

We had a wonderful experience here and would definitely considering visiting here again!
